Things to Know Before Visiting Jagannath Puri Temple
Shri Jagannath Temple is governed by ancient traditions and strict security protocols. Here are the core guidelines every traveler and tour leader must know:
- 1. Prohibited Items: Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, leather belts, wallets, and tobacco products are strictly banned inside the temple complex. Dedicated lockers are available outside.
- 2. Dress Code: Modest, traditional Indian attire is recommended (Dhoti/Kurta for men, Sarees or Salwar Kameez for women). Sleeveless shirts and shorts are not permitted.
- 3. Entrance Points: The primary eastern entrance is the Lion's Gate (Simhadwara). Morning timings (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) are best for peaceful darshan before afternoon rituals.
- 4. Anand Bazar Mahaprasad: The holy prasad of Lord Jagannath (cooked in earthen pots over wood fire) is available fresh from midday onwards at the sacred Anand Bazar within the temple.
